In 2011, the United Nations declared October 11th as International Day of the Girl, an initiative to help "galvanize worldwide enthusiasm for goals to better girls' lives, providing an opportunity for them to show leadership and reach their full potential".
As a woman in a male-dominated industry and as a mother of two little girls, I am keenly aware of gender bias and gender stereotyping. In the US, we have made huge strides for gender equality but as always, there is more work to be done. Globally, women and girls truly have a mountain to climb in terms of justice and equality.
If you are in the throes of wedding planning, consider forgoing traditional wedding favors and instead make a donation in support of an organization focused on gender equality and female empowerment such as Day of the Girl or the International Rescue Committee.
Or make a donation to a similar organization in the name of your bridesmaids (rather than giving the smart and strong ladies who support you just another tote bag that has "Bridesmaid" written in rhinestones). Donate just $24 to help a woman have a safe birth experience in Syria or $58 to fund a year of school for a young girl in countries like Afghanistan or Lebanon. When we educate our girls, we change the world. Help give girls a voice...because as Lena Dunham says, making noise is making change.
Happy Planning,
Lizzie
