Audrey's Farmhouse & The Greenhouses

I recently stumbled across a new wedding venue in the Hudson Valley and immediately fell in love with the history of the site, the decor, and the overall design. Hoping to highlight the venue in a future post, but in the meantime....

Have a Fantastic Weekend...

Hoping you have a fantastic weekend. Here are a few love-related links from around the web...enjoy!

Need a wedding venue suggestion? I highly recommend The Garrison in Putnam County. Just about an hour north of NYC. Take a virtual tour of the venue here.

Great little bit about NYC City Hall weddings from my favorite radio station, WNYC.

The best national parks, as rated by one couple who has been to them all. Go to a national park on your honeymoon or your next trip. National parks are truly the best thing about the United States!

Peaches are in season in the Hudson Valley! Go pick your own at Fishkill Farms and maybe even pop the question under a peach tree. Then head to Beacon's Roundhouse to celebrate.

Loved this article about a transgender couple, from the NYT. Great story about finding love under challenging circumstances but their wedding!!! Complete with a bouncy house for the kids and smoked brisket. #weddinggoals

Have a lovely weekend...

Hey there! It's finally the weekend. Looks like it's going to be a rainy, chilly one but I hope you enjoy it none-the-less. Here are a few love-related links from around the web...enjoy!

Get married at Buttermilk Falls for amazing views, great farm-to-table cuisine, and onsite lodging. Located in Milton, New York...just 75 miles north of NYC.

Or have your wedding at Opus 40 in Saugerties, New York. So cool.

Loved this story about an accidental wedding dress from Cup of Jo contributor Caroline Donofrio.

A great podcast about marriage from NPR's Hidden Brain.

How about a bird-themed wedding? Audubon's Birds of America prints are available to print (for free!) from here. Instead of boring old table numbers for seating arrangements, use birds instead to test our your guests bird identification skills.

Reading for the Week!

2018 has certainly come in like a lion, with frigid temperatures hitting most of the country and now a government shutdown...here's hoping the next few weeks will be a bit brighter.

A few fun links from around the web...enjoy!

Some great photos of a recent wedding at Fishkill Farms in Dutchess County.

Reading for the Week!

Hi there! I was in NYC this weekend to celebrate my beautiful friend's 40th birthday and on my walk through the East Village, I spotted this graffiti. How fitting! Hope you all had a great weekend!

Some fun love-related links from around the web...enjoy!

Did you know you can get married at Hilltop Hanover Farm in Yorktown Heights (Westchester Co.)?

Should your spouse be your best friend? Some food for thought.

A vintage wedding dress. It's bra-friendly and costs $62. The Etsy shop Velvet Pin Vintage has an amazing assortment of retro gowns for fantastic prices.

I've been searching for a great new perfume and was excited to discover Phlur. Conscientious fragrance...I'm going to ask for two sample sets from Mr. HVG for Christmas!

How pretty is this engagement ring? Subtly stylish. And if it couldn't get any better, Bario Neal specializes in ethically made jewelry. Support the businesses that are doing some good in the world!

Reading for the Week!

Hi! Happy July 4th Holiday Weekend! I hope you all are celebrating with family and friends. We've got not one but two parties to attend! I've managed to sneak in a little "me time" and went to visit Dana at Jar Worthy, a little candle shop in Carmel. With Dana's help, I even created my own custom candle! More on Dana and her candles to come...look for a blog post soon!

A few fun links from around the web...enjoy!

Just discovered the Theater at the University Settlement Camp in Beacon...if you are planning a wedding and are still searching for a venue, check this place out!

Love this story (a warning: it made me tear up, so if you're wearing mascara and sitting at your work desk, you may want to save this one for later).

For your next bachelorette party (or BBQ or beach picnic), forty-ounce rose՛.

This dress...for the petite bride-to-be who's also on a budget!

And for us married folks...a trick for keeping the spark alive.

Happy Planning,
Lizzie

p.s. Jar Worthy is having a great sale...use promo code FIREWORKS from now until July 5th for 25% off of your entire order and free shipping on any order over $40....the Cilantro Lime and Coconut Magnolia candles smell delightful. :)

Weekend Wedding Reading...

Hello there! Hope you are enjoying this cold but sunny weekend. Here at HVG, we're staying hunkered down and are preparing for a potential blizzard on Tuesday!

Here are a few fun links from around the wedding web...enjoy!

Wedding dresses without the wait...love number 7!

These upstate NY venues....some have been featured on HVG and some are new to me!

A great decorating tip from Ina Garten.

I wouldn't be brave enough to even attempt this...how about you?

Having a casual wedding? How about these for bridesmaid dresses? In love with the drifter grey. And that $59 price point can't be beat.

The Barn at Liberty Farms

Exciting news....two new event venues have reached out to Hudson Valley Green asking to be included in the ever-growing list of barn venues in New York. And both are equestrian in nature!

The Barn at Liberty Farms
(c) Elena Wolfe Photography

The Barn at Liberty Farms is a exceptionally beautiful venue located in Ghent, New York (Columbia County). The converted stallion barn is set on a 300-acre certified organic farm and equestrian center. The barn seats 150 guests. The outdoor space can accommodate many more.

Truly an amazing site...

The Barn at Liberty Farms
(c) Elena Wolfe Photography

The Barn website is very informative as it includes pricing, amenities, and a great list of "what's included" and "what's not included" in the rental fee. So many venues do not specify this type of information outright; it's refreshing to see a venue be so forthcoming and clear.

To find out more...

The second new venue is Kirby Hill Farm located in Pawling, New York (Dutchess County). I'll be publishing a second blog post on this venue in the next few days, so check back!

New Barn Wedding Venues

Over the last few months, several different wedding venues have contacted HVG requesting to be incorporated into our ever-growing barn wedding venue list on the blog. Two new barn venues to note are Stonehouse Gardens in Ulster County and the Wedding Barn at Lakota's Farm in Washington County. Hop on over to the barn venue webpage here and check out our full list!

(c) Historic Barns of Nipmoose

In other news....

I've been interviewed by not one but two journalists from the Poughkeepsie Journal over the past two weeks. Topics included the issue of greenwashing (of which I know a bit about) and green weddings (of which I know a lot about!). So fun to be interviewed...makes me feel special.

And one more thing, a great big thank you to everyone who has stuck around for new blog posts. Life has gotten busy since Mr. HVG and I welcomed identical twins Lila and Nora into the world in late February. After a 31-day stint in the NICU, we brought the girls home and couldn't be happier (or more sleep deprived!).

Venue Spotlight: The Living Room

Choosing a venue for your wedding can be an overwhelming endeavor. Searching for a space that reflects who you are as a couple, a space that is in your price range, and one that will fit your guest list can be, well, daunting.

Here at Hudson Valley Green, my goal is to make your wedding planning a bit more manageable. So when Nathalie of The Living Room reached out to tell me about her new event space in Cold Spring (Putnam County), I was all about it!

I met Nathalie on a beautifully sunny afternoon to tour The Living Room and was not disappointed.

(c) The Living Room

The History. Nathalie and her partner-in-crime, Phillip, began renting the dilapidated Palen's Drug Store in 2011. Originally, Nathalie and Phillip used the old drug store as a health and wellness space but recently have revamped the space to hold a wide variety of events, from weddings to dance classes to art shows. Although the venue is officially named The Living Room, the space still proudly displays the original Palen's Drug Store sign on the storefront.

The Details. The Living Room accommodates 70 guests for a sit-down dinner or 115 guests for cocktails.  The space can be rented for a competitive price for a 24-hr block of time (which allows plenty of time for set up); for rates, please contact The Living Room directly.

There is one bathroom and two small rooms which can be used as a coat check or dressing rooms. There's no kitchen but plenty of space in the yard/parking area behind The Living Room for a caterer to set up a tent.

(c) The Living Room

The ambience in the main space is warm and radiant. Natural wood plank walls surrounding the space and soft lighting add to the cozy, intimate feel.

(c) The Living Room

(c) The Living Room

And while you can certainly have the wedding ceremony at The Living Room, you can also make use of Cold Spring's magnificent town gazebo, several churches, even the library! Because The Living Room is located in the heart of Cold Spring, most ceremony sites (and the MetroNorth Train Station!) are all within walking distance.

(c) Hudson Valley Green

If you aren't familiar with Cold Spring, I highly suggest a visit. It's a smallish river town with a rustic-chic feel and loads of charm. The views of the Hudson Highlands and Hudson River cannot be beat. Stunning estates, art galleries, amazing hiking trails, and the cutest French bistro ever, Le Bouchon (try the duck confit), are just a few of the reasons I love Cold Spring.

(c) Hudson Valley Green

And as if The Living Room wasn't hip enough, one of Martha Stewart's employees was recently married at The Living Room and the venue will be featured in the next Martha Stewart Weddings issue!

For more information about The Living Room, please call (845) 270 - 8210 and speak with Nathalie (and tell her you learned about The Living Room on HVG!) or visit The Living Room's website  http://www.coldspringlivingroom.com/

Love at a Private Estate

Happy New Year, everyone! Here's to 2013...wishing everyone health and happiness! And perhaps that special someone in your life popped the question during this past holiday season and in that case, "Congrats!".  2013 might be a very busy wedding planning year for you!

Looking for a great place to host your big day? A Private Estate, located in Clermont, NY (less than a two and a half hour drive from NYC), might just be the perfect venue for your wedding.  With gorgeous grounds, on-site lodging, and a big barn to boot, you might just say that A Private Estate has got it all.

The views of the surrounding Catskill Mountains and the Hudson River are absolutely breathtaking.  Can you imagine how great the photos would be?  The possibilities for amazing photos are just endless.

(c) A Private Estate

(c) A Private Estate

The property was developed by the Livingston Family in 1856 and has remained relatively unchanged since that time. The property is also now part of a National Register Historic District (pretty neat, eh?). The venue is comprised of manicured grounds, a large barn complex, and a recently renovated carriage house.

(c) A Private Estate

The barn comfortably seats 150 guests. A maximum of 275 guests can be accommodated using a tent placed on the spacious riverside lawn.  The 2013 rental fees for exclusive use of the property are $5,500 for weddings up to 150 guests and $7,000 for 151 to 275 guests.  Events on holiday weekends incur an additional fee of $500 to $1,000 (price increase dependent on the wedding size).

(c) A Private

Although there is no on-site catering, the barn houses a hidden prep kitchen (which will save you money and your caterer lots of hassle). In addition, the barn has three bathrooms (bathrooms are typically hard to come by when dealing with barns constructed in the 1800s).

The renovated carriage house sleeps up to 12 guest with four bedrooms and 4.5 baths that is perfect for your wedding party for post-wedding festivities.

A Private Estate is open for events from Memorial Day through mid-October and is open for tours by appointment throughout the remainder of the year.  Complete with a wood-burning fireplace and kitchen, your guests are sure to be cozy and relaxed.

For a truly unique wedding venue, please check out A Private Estate. You will not be disappointed! For more information, please visit A Private Estate's website or contact:

Love at the ElmRock Inn

So many exciting things happening at Hudson Valley Green!  I've been contacted by several different vendors recently.  I can't wait to partner with them to bring you some great information about local businesses doing wonderful things right here in the Hudson Valley...

And so when I received the invitation to attend the grand opening of the ElmRock Inn in Stone Ridge (Ulster County), I was excited.  The opportunity to check out a newly restored bed and breakfast, taste locally sourced food prepared by a fabulous chef, and meet some great new people, how could I say no to that?

(c) Hudson Valley Green

Chef Mark Suszczynski and his beautiful wife, Kim Weeks, threw one helluva good grand opening party.  The food was delicious and the setting was gorgeous.  Nestled on five verdant acres, this Inn is just perfect.  Spoiler alert: be prepared for lots of photos in this post!

(c) Hudson Valley Green

Chef Mark and Kim have restored the Inn using local master carpenters and have redecorated using period furniture from some of the local antique stores.  The interior of the Inn is absolutely beautiful.  The dining room can accomodate 50 guests seated...perfect for rehearsal dinners or smaller, more intimate weddings.  The magnificent windows, letting in so much natural light, really add to the ambience of the space.

(c) Hudson Valley Green
Main Dining Room of ElmRock Inn

There is no site fee for ElmRock Inn if the entire Inn is booked for a two-night stay.  The Inn accommodates 14 overnight guests and the neighboring carriage house accommodates an additional 6 guests.  All rooms in the Inn are equipped with private baths (I so love that!).  Both the Inn and carriage house are equipped with WiFi.

(c) Hudson Valley Green
Yep, that's a fireplace! How many hotels have you been to that have a fireplace in your room???

And if the interior of the Inn doesn't totally woo you, then just take a stroll around the grounds.  The acoustic guitarist at the grand opening was a fabulous touch!

Chef Mark prepares all of the cuisine at ElmRock Inn.  The food was absolutely delish.  Chef Mark and his catering company, HarvestReal Food,  source many of their ingredients from local farms (I wish I would have taken photos but I was too busy eating!).

Pricing is competitively set, starting at $55 per person. Tent, table, and chair rentals incur additional costs. For any event over 50 people, a toilet trailer must be rented. For more information about hosting your event at ElmRock Inn, visit http://elmrockinn.com, or contact Tammy Basten, the ElmRock Inn event coordinator, at 845-687-4492.

Eat. Drink. Be Married: Part I

If you haven't gotten excited about the craft brew craze yet, now's the perfect time. The Hudson Valley is chock full of breweries so check 'em out and make your local brewmasters proud by serving some   Hudson Valley suds at your wedding! Or even better yet, have your wedding at the brewery. Now that's really partying in style!

(c) Hudson Valley Green...at Brewery Ommegang in Cooperstown, NY

Here's a list of some great Hudson Valley breweries (and some others close by!), categorized by county:

Dutchess County
Hyde Park Brewing Company: located in Hyde Park. Check out this brewery for live music and trivia - perfect for a girls (or guys) night out!

Otsego County
Brewery Ommegang: located in Cooperstown. Although not technically in the Hudson Valley, this brewery was too good to pass up. Ommegang brews are available in most grocery stores but the brewmasters there have not given up quality for quantity. Be sure to try to Hennepin and the Witte.

Ulster County
The Guilded Otter: located in New Paltz, relax with a Guilded Otter brew after a long day of climbing in the 'Gunks.

Keegan Ales: located in Kingston. This brewery is next on HVG's list of places to visit! Keegan does Trivia Tuesdays and live music five nights a week! Plus, on Thursdays, Keegan Ales says "thank you" to all of their local supporters with $3 mason jars.

Newburgh Brewing Company: located in Newburgh, the Newburgh Brewing Company is the newest brewery to establish roots in the Hudson Valley. Suds only available in kegs at this time but look for NBC in a restaurant near you!

Westchester County
Captain Lawrence Brewing Company: located in Elmsford, this is a Hudson Valley Green favorite! Two "must tastes" are the Family Meal and the Smoked Porter. Want to have a wedding that's totally unique? Have your wedding in Captain Lawrence's tasting room and outdoor beer garden. The tasting room holds 150 guests.

Peekskill Brewing: located in Peekskill. Try the Vanilla Bourbon Stout. Host your rehearsal dinner at Peekskill Brewing's dining room or better yet, have Peekskill come to you with their full service catering.

The Five Boroughs
Brooklyn Brewery: located in, you guessed it, Brooklyn. Another Hudson Valley Green favorite. Host your private event, from 20 to 200 guests, right in the brewery. Brooklyn Brewery has partnered with several local restaurants to provide catering.

Chelsea Brewery: located on Pier 59, this brewery can host (what an amazing location this place would be!) or cater your event.

Heartland Brewery: several locations but HVG's favorite is right next to the Empire State Building. Check at the views at the top then head down to ground level to enjoy a homemade brew or two.

Long Island
Blue Point Brewing Company: located in Patchogue (Suffolk County). Small tasting room but big taste. Try the Blueberry Ale!

What's your favorite New York brewery? Let us know by leaving a comment!

Full Moon Farm

Nestled amongst the greenery of the Catskill Mountains, you'll find Full Moon Farm in Medusa, NY. Complete with rustic hand hewn beams and amazing views, Full Moon Farm might just be the perfect venue for your big day!

(c) Full Moon Farm

The barn at Full Moon Farm dates back to the late 1700s and has seen quite a bit of history. In 2007, the property suffered a ravenous fire yet amazingly, the barn did not burn and still stands in all of its bucolic glory. What a wonderful way to begin your life together with your love...by getting married in a barn that has stood the test of time!

(c) Full Moon Farm

(c) Full Moon Farm

The barn provides a romantic and intimate back drop for your event. The possibilities for creative decorations are endless....and in conjunction with the natural light, the photos would be so amazing!

The site rental fee of the barn is reasonable at $4,950 and accommodates 125 guests. The farmhouse (which unfortunately did burn in the fire but has since been rebuilt) is available for rent at $600/night and includes cleaning and concierge services. The Farmhouse is incredibly beautiful with four bedrooms, two and a half bathrooms, full kitchen (and farm sink - love those!!!), and dining room. The farmhouse is absolutely perfect for some pre-wedding festivities.

The barn is also available for photo shoots. Prices range on rental fees for this so be sure to contact Full Moon Farm for more information.

(c) Full Moon Farm
And if you're not sure if Full Moon Farm is the right fit for your wedding or other event, how about some anecdotal evidence? One of my really wonderful co-workers had her wedding at Full Moon Farm and absolutely loved it. Her family still talks about her rockin' wedding.

If you are interested in having your wedding or other event at Full Moon Farm, visit:

Love in the Byrdcliffe Barn

Looking for a barn wedding venue? The Byrdcliffe Barn, stationed on the 250-acre mountainside campus of the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild, sets the scene for rustic and romantic weddings. The Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild is a regional center for the arts located in Woodstock, NY. Comprised of the campus on Overlook Mountain and the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts in the village of Woodstock, Byrdcliffe offers an integrated program of exhibitions, performances, classes, workshops, symposia, summer residences and artist housing. Byrdcliffe embraces all disciplines of artistic endeavor in a colloborative spirit, for the benefit of cultural life in the Hudson Valley. Byrdcliffe was founded in 1902 and has operated as a nonprofit organization since 1938.

The 100-year old Byrdcliffe Barn is a truly stunning structure. Warm and inviting - a perfect place to celebrate your big day!
(c) Byrdcliffe Barn
The rental fee for the Byrdcliffe Barn is set competitively at $2,000 for one day. The adjacent White Pines grounds is also available for rent for an additional fee of $750. The White Pines grounds would be great for outdoor cocktails or ceremonies.

Venue fees help sustain the art community on the beautiful campus.  Support our local artists and host your event at Byrdcliffe!

(c)  Byrdcliffe Barn
Please note that the barn does not have any kitchen amenities. Be sure to inform your caterer of this!

(c) Byrdcliffe Barn
In addition to the barn as an event venue, the Byrdcliffe Theater (located on the campus) and the Kleinert/James Center for the Arts (in the village of Woodstock) are available for rent. Visit the Woodstock Byrdcliffe Guild's website or call for more info.

The Inn at West Settlement

Here's another barn event venue to add to the list! The Inn at West Settlement, located just outside the Hudson Valley in Roxbury, NY, might be just the perfect place to have your eco-friendly wedding.

(c) The Inn at West Settlement

Nestled among the peaks of the Catskill Mountains and 1,500 acres of New York City Department of Environmental Protection (NYCDEP) watershed property, The Inn at West Settlement offers spectacular views and superb privacy. Recently I had the opportunity to speak with Andrew McArdle, proprietor of the Inn, about all of what the Inn has to offer as a venue.

Andrew and his wife, Kim, have worked tirelessly to bring this barn to its full potential. Andrew spoke of the most recent renovations to accommodate large events. The 40ft x100ft barn is ideal for wedding receptions and the grounds, complete with a pond and level areas for a large tent, give way for picture-perfect ceremonies.  The venue allows for weddings and other events to come to their own conclusion - so no having to kick guests out after the usual 4 or 5 hour time allotment. Want to continue the festivities until 3am? Party on!

(c) The Inn at West Settlement
In addition to the fabulously rustic barn, the inn comfortably fits 10 to 12 guests for overnight lodging. Complete with a fully equipped kitchen, sauna and jacuzzi, it's a great place to have you and your bridal party prep for the wedding! Renting the inn for 2 nights is incredibly budget-friendly. With 12 people, the bill comes to a whopping $41.67 per person/night. The inn can be rented for 7 nights at less than $30 per person/night (total of 12 people). Amazing!

(c) The Inn at West Settlement
Oh, and did I mention the organic vegetable garden and blueberry orchard on the property? Yes, I think I'm in love with this place.

Interested in having your event at The Inn at West Settlement? Contact Andrew McArdle at (518) 672-5423 or visit their website, http://www.theinnatwestsettlement.com/index.php?page=home.

Barn Weddings

Barns have such an amazing ambience, it's no wonder that wedding ceremonies and receptions are now being held in them more than ever. The New York State Barn Coalition (NYSBC) is an organization, run entirely by volunteers, that works to preserve New York's argicultural architecture. The Hudson Valley is home to many historic farms and orchards, why not celebrate the Valley's heritage and have your event in a barn?

Beginning the Planning Process....

Planning an event as large as a wedding can be overwhelming....but the process also can be incredibly fun and satisfying. The first major decision is the venue. The venue really sets the stage for the event. If you are looking for a more environmentally friendly venue,  here's one to check out!

(c) Harbor Links Golf Course
Harbor Links Golf Course
Port Washington, Long Island

So I know what you're thinking...."Golf courses have a substantial negative impact on the environment - think of all those fertilizers and insecticides used to keep the grass, oh so, green and not to mention the huge amount of water wasted!!!".

And you're completely right but Harbor Links is different. The facility has developed a Natural Resouce Management Plan which incorporates wildlife and habitat conservation, water quality monitoring and management, water conservation, pest management, etc. Plus, as a member of the Audubon Signature Program, the golf course is helping to preserve a little swath of green space to be used by resident and migratory birds. Cool, huh?

The menu options aren't organic or locally grown but the facility is capable of seating a large number of guests. The food is great and the event coordinator is even better.

...did I mention this is where Mr. HVG and I held our reception? Love, love, love this venue.

Check Harbor Links out and let me know what you think!

Happy Planning,
Lizzie
